Beauty in the Indian Ocean - Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a natural paradise. The tropical climate, clear blue waters, spectacular beaches, varied water sports, fabulous flora and fauna and diverse exotic culture makes Sri Lanka holidays special.

Sri Lanka is an island located in the Indian Ocean just south of India. The island mild tropical climate make it a great vacation destination year round. There are miles and miles of sugary white sand beaches. Water sports draw many to Sri Lanka. One side of the island has calm clear waters, perfect for children and the elderly to wade in and have fun. The other side of the island has large waves and strong breezes. This has drawn wind and kite surfers, board surfers and many others who love water sports. The entire island is a snorkeler's paradise. It is surrounded by coral reefs which attracts thousands of tropical fish in a kaleidoscope of colours. There is even sunken ships not far off shore. Serious divers can swim out and explore them.

The mountains on the south-central section of the island are a hidden gem. There are over 100 named waterfalls, lush evergreen forests and holy and historical sites like the Royal City of Kandy and the Temple of Tooth. There are also quaint secluded villages and practitioners of Ayurvedic holistic medicines who use herbs, massages, warm baths and fire as part of their healing rites. The mountains also provide numerous trails leading to peaceful, tranquil spots deep in the woods.

Over 13% of Sri Lanka is game parks and nature preserves. There are 12 parks and 52 preserves. They are home to 92 types of mammals including elephants, leopards, monkeys, sloth bears, deer and anteaters. There are also hundreds of species of birds.

There is a diverse network of hotels, guest-houses, villas, holiday homes, eco lodges, and luxury apartments where you can spend your holidays. Some Sri Lanka hotels are located in refurbished colonial structures while other ultra-modern Sri Lanka hotels offer panoramic view of the ocean.

Don't miss the Buddhist Kandy Esala Perahera Festival where elephants decked out in lights and brightly costumes parade through the streets while drums and wind instruments fill the air with exotic music. There are also Hindu and Tamil festivals, some lasting for as long as 25 days.

Sri Lanka holidays will expose you to a world few get the chance to see and you will never be the same.
